Writing a file to disk using ASP.NET 2.0 and C# .NET

ASP.NET File Tutorial

This tutorial will show you how to write to a file on the disk using ASP.NET 2.0 and C#.NET

To write a simple file to the disk, we will need to first import the System.IO namespace. The System.IO namespace contains the StreamWriter type that we will use to perform our disk write.

using System.IO

If you're looking for a really good web host, try Server Intellect - we found the setup procedure and control panel, very easy to adapt to and their IT team is awesome!

We'll put our code in the btnSubmit_Click() event.

When the btnSubmit_Click() event fires it executes the File.CreateText method with a parameter specifying the path and name of the file which we would like to write to, it also returns a StreamWriter object instance which we then execute the WriteLine and Close methods on.

protected void btnSubmit_Click(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
try {
StreamWriter sw = File.CreateText(MapPath("myFile.txt"));
sw.WriteLine( txtFile.Text );
sw.Close();
}
catch (IOException ex) {
lblStatus.Text += ex.Message;
}

<td align="center" bgcolor="#FFFFFF">
<asp:TextBox ID="txtFile" runat="server" TextMode="MultiLine"></asp:TextBox><br />
<asp:Button ID="btnSubmit" runat="server" Text="Submit" OnClick="btnSubmit_Click" /><br /> &nbsp;
<asp:label ID="lblStatus" runat="server"></asp:label></td>
</tr>
</table>
